Part III and CONCLUSION

One day I am lying across my bed when I get this vision…I’m not sure if it was a dream or if it was a vision because I don’t know if I was asleep or just thinking…lol. Whatever it was, I could see this plan in great detail…the colors, the format, the set up; content…EVERYTHING was laid out for me. I saw a website called Fabulous Black Woman. It would include an “Inspirational Corner” where poetry, lyrics, affirmations and other quotes that got me through my tough times would be located. I would have a Black Business Directory and spotlight women with stories that could help others…At the time I had no idea of how to build a website, but I was an expert in Word, so I made a mock homepage, so that I could present it to a couple of web designers. I knew I needed to reach more people than being a counselor could do. There were so many people, especially African American women that needed to hear my story and other stories of triumph and inspiration so that they don't feel alone in the struggle. These stories also gave many women hope, ideas and the confidence to follow their dreams. It was time for us to heal and I finally had some insight on how to do this, now I figured out the internet was my avenue in doing it.

By this time I was in the middle of my internship at school and I had started job searching. As soon as my internship ended, I had landed a job, paying much more than the one I had been so rudely fired from...lol I also excellent benefits. Now I was back to the hustle and bustle of going to school full-time, working full-time and taking care of the kids. But the Spirit wasn’t done moving in me, the journey had just begun and it had turned into a mission that I no longer had a choice in completing. So I incorporated researching how to do a website into my Psychology studying time. I decided that I would combine my new found knowledge of how to handle stress and emotional abuse with trying to help women that visited my site. Somehow, everything was coming together for me. At times, it seemed so effortlessly that I knew I really had nothing to do with it and it was God working through me. I still sometimes look at the way things unfolded and I really can’t say what I did to get to where I am except for listening and obeying…

Around this same time, I had also been researching for YEARS on how to deal with the extremely traumatic hair loss I had suffered. I had used everything possible to combat the hair loss, but after 5 years, nothing worked well enough for me to call it a success. Therefore, I started to make my own concoctions and not long after using them, I noticed a drastic change in my hair’s health. Many people around me started to notice and began to ask what I was doing to it and what I was using. I began to offer them instructions (Which I eventually turned into a Guide to growing Black Hair) I also would give them samples of my concoctions (Which I eventually turned into Sweet Nature by Eddie). And, soon they all were noticing awesome results! The excitement prompted me to market the products, again with no marketing back ground and only one year of pursuing a business degree.

Now, I was going to school full-time, working full-time, raising two kids, and starting my own business. OMG, how was this going to work…It wasn’t! School was very important to me, but the Entrepreneurial Spirit had taken over. Fabulous Black Woman was a way to combine both passions; helping women with taking care of their hair as well as taking care of their Spirits! I finished up the last class and school was put on hold indefinitely. I can still remember the disappointment in my best friend’s voice when I told him that I was quitting school. He gave me every reason why it didn’t make sense and every reason why school was the “key”; although I wasn’t going to him for permission, but to share my exciting new venture with him, he was not excited at all. Discernment allowed me to “see” his fear, to understand his concerns, and to accept the fact that he was worried about me, but I was no longer afraid, I had learned to listen, to obey, my faith was incredible and I KNEW that I was finally on MY purposeful path.

In November Fabulous Black Woman and Sweet Nature by Eddie celebrates their THIRD YEAR! In this time I have been accepted in the Who’s Who in North America directory for my work in the hair care industry. I have gotten my products in four salons in four states with OUT any solicitation, but by word of mouth. I won the Female Entrepreneur of the 90’s during a local awards ceremony, I’ve been promoted to a Platinum author through Ezine Articles for the quality of my articles and the volume or re-publication they receive, I opened a Sweet Nature store OFFLINE, and I am working on a “workshop” tour and some other EXTREMELY exciting things next year.

EVERYTHING, I MEAN EVERYTHING you go through has a lesson and a purpose. My story has allowed me to look at things neutrally. I no longer judge thing or label them as “good” or “bad”…they only become either, when you DECIDE it is. I try to always DECIDE it’s GOOD or at the very minimum…purposeful. I just look back at where I was and where I am now and I realize that I have been so abundantly blessed and it’s my responsibility to be grateful and appreciative by helping others!

National Positive Attitude Month Part II

But before my transformation was complete, there were several steps I needed to take. It was time for me to get intimate with the person I had become. My values had changed, my understanding of my life had changed, fear was replaced with confidence, and I was ready…ready to begin a new journey! Boy, oh boy…I’m glad I was ready because the journey took me to places that the old me would have NEVER been able to handle! By now I was married, with a second child, a new car and a new SUV, a new house and a white picket fence all at the ripe old age of 25, I was living the dream, but ALL of it was acquired out of fear, manipulation, TAKING control, doing what I was TOLD I should do and basically taking whatever came to me (settling) because I didn’t have enough FAITH that I would be blessed with all that I wanted and deserved!

I do believe that once you are given discernment and you begin to understand your purpose it’s impossible to hold on to those old things, no matter how much you love or value them…It was time for ALL of it to be taken from me (or for me to release it all) and along with it the comfort of many people I loved and valued! Unfortunately my transformation was getting ready to hurt people close to me, but I knew that at the end of this journey, not only would each of them understand, but they would thank me!

So, it was time to go through a divorce, time to share joint custody of my daughter, which I prayed to have every night, and was on the verge of being obsessed with (still am…lol), time to lose the nice big house, it was even time for me to lose the job, pretty much ALL AT ONCE! But, It was also time to give up the struggle; it was time to relinquish control and a time to have faith. Now, with all of that out of the way, I could really focus on me, because guess what that’s all I had!

For the first time since I was 14, I didn’t have a job, my days belonged to me, I didn’t have to worry about a mountain of bills (I stopped paying all of them, except the utility bills when I realized the house was going and I was going to file bankruptcy). I no longer had to dance to anyone else’s drum or try to please someone once I was divorced (not that I had a bad marriage or husband, because I didn’t, but I don’t think I was able to be my whole self because I really didn’t know who that was while I was married). For the first time in my adult life I was only a mother 50% of the time, allowing me to have days of complete serenity and silence and just being me! Because of my recent transformation, I was able to appreciate ALL of these things that many people consider trials, or failures, or stressors as lessons and an opportunity to grow and improve!

My life had slowed down so tremendously; now I could see things more clearly. I wasn’t “losing” my creativity, my dreams, or goals in the everyday hustle and bustle of taking care of kids, running a household, going to work at that LAME job…lol or from pure exhaustion! For three months, I didn’t even consider getting a new job. I woke up with my kids and actually cooked breakfast, took them to school, then came back home and meditated on some days, prayed on others, relaxed, slept, or took myself out on dates. Then out of the BLUE…this crazy idea popped in my head! I was healed and it was time for me to try to help others heal! I realized what the past few years were about…I had to experience these things in order to help others deal with them. I instantly changed my major from business to Human Services (oh, did I mention I had gone back to school during this time) I would be a counselor because I really didn't have an interest whatsoever in the business degree I was pursing, it wasn't my passion and I knew I likely wouldn't use it...lol (ironic huh)(to be continued)

October is National Positive Attitude Month...

I can remember being a teenager and being labeled as a "mean girl". I walked around with a chip on my shoulder and dared anyone to say anything to me or even look at me in a "disrespectful" manner. I can't count how many times my mother and teachers told me about my attitude problem, but it seemed the more they complained the worse it became. Soon, I was described as the girl with the attitude, the mean girl, or the bi#ch by anyone who knew me, and I wore that label as a badge of honor. Holding my tongue was never an option and hurting someone's feelings was never my concern and many times was my objective. Most of the girls in my "clique" were the same way, so we fed off of one another and soon were feared or hated by everyone. Funny, we thought we were envied and admired at the time.

One day my best friend and I were hanging out. Some girl looked at me in an "offensive" way, and I was positive she said something under her breathe about me. This is all it took for me to fly off of the handle, and confront her. My goal was to have a physical altercation with her. The girl got really scared and jumped in her car. She yelled a few explicit words out of the window and peeled off. OMG, my adrenaline was pumping and my first instinct was to jump in my car and go after her! My best friend calmly looked at me and asked me, "Why are you so mean; was all of that even necessary"? The questions stopped me dead in my track, I was never asked that before, that's just how I was and what every one expected of me. After I got home, I sat down and tried to answer the question and I just couldn't figure it out; being negative, mean, and nasty was who I was. I didn't feel as if I had a choice in the matter.

Over the next few months, I searched for answers. It was important for me to understand why I was so mean. After some soul searching, I realized that I was hurting and acting out in a way to make others feel my pain.

I was a "daddy's girl". My dad and I were extremely close. My parent's separated when I was about 6 or 7, it was such a terrible time, that I remember waking up from nightmares shaking and crying in the middle of the day for no apparent reason. I also thought back to when my father vanished off of the face of the Earth when I was 13 years old and reappearing years later with no real explanation. I recalled becoming a teen mother with absolutely no support or help from my mother (or anyone else) as my son's father spent every few months in jail. I was so ashamed that I left school my Senior year, even though I was an honor student with a 3.8 average and no one encouraged me to graduate, I was especially angry about that! I also thought about the years my mother completely abandoned my brother and I emotionally, while I tried to figure out who I was and how to make it in the world. Well damn, I guess I had good reason to have a bad attitude, especially since no one told me how to have a better one. People always pointed out that I had a bad attitude, but I was just a kid and no one took the time to figure out why or tried to help me change.

I do believe that growing up I wasn't aware of the hurt and most likely blocked it out, and it manifested in my attitude. I didn't know how to deal with my "issues" in a positive way. But now I was an adult and it was time to take responsibility for my attitude, it was time to forgive and move on. I had to understand that although I was hurt, the ones that hurt me likely were hurting even more than I was. It was a hard pill to swallow, but I realized my parents weren't super parents just 2 human beings that likely had no clue what they were doing to their children, but doing what they THOUGHT was the best thing at the time. They had their own emotional issues, beliefs, and struggles that affected their decisions, that of course affected my life, but as an adult, it was time to let it all go!

I began to think about how I would feel if someone treated me or spoke to me in the manner I did at times. I would be PISSED, so I began to be more conscious of my tone, my demeanor, and my words. I then began my journey of healing, I read books on how to forgive and why it's so important to forgive. I also read ways to be more positive and began to surround myself with positive people. I also began to make every effort to be the parent to my son my parent's could have been to me if they had healed.

It took some time, but I had healed, I had learned to forgive, I learned to love unconditionally, a learned not to judge and I finally was able to look at the positive side of situations. Now my life was transforming, I was experiencing growth beyond my expectation, I as more energetic and excited about my life (To Be Continued)

The most INSANE 7 days

Well...This week has been INSANE! First of all...SEPTEMBER is National Self Improvement month! So, I started off excited and ready to do some self-improving! Although this is so important for me to do every month, this month I decided to step it up some! I sat down and journaled all of my goals for the month...Most of them related to business of course...so my entry went a little like this...I will do research and advertise on appropriate blogs, radio stations, websites, etc. I will participate in 3 hair care expos this month, and of course the usual newsletters, blogging, phone calls, marketing stuff!

Well, the first week, MY WEBSITE...Sweet Nature by Eddie not only gets STOLEN, but several of my orders were left on the site so I was unable to retrieve them! Fortunately, I was able to get word out to most of my customers before too much damage occurred! So, I basically had to go and upload ALL of my products on the Fabulous Black Woman site...www.fabulousblackwoman.com, which took me about 30 hours total this holiday weekend! I also had to make a police report, along with an online government fraud report and spend countless hours trying to get the issue resolve, which of course is still ongoing! Here's the clincher...This was the BEST part of my weekend!!!

So, of course...I prayed A LOT and meditated A LOT! I reflected on the events and realized that there was a HUGE lesson to be learned in each of them! I realized where the missteps were taken and took a mental note of all the times my intuition told me to do another thing and I didn't listen and did what I THOUGHT I should do instead! I took Tuesday OFF of work to regroup and by Wednesday...I was actually recharged and excited, I even cried because I felt SO blessed to be able to not only survive the, but be so victorious, when so many people that faced the same things I did could no longer function in life, let along be successful! I gave thanks for my resilience, my strength, my emotional well-being, for the insane amount of encouragement and support from those around me! I felt so blessed that I was able to find the lesson and not be one bit bitter and how easy it was for me to "understand" and forgive and just move on with my life and my business without any hesitation or reservation! For a moment, I thought I was crazy for not being more upset, I thought I had to be in denial because I didn't feel as stressed as I thought I should or as people kept telling me I should be. I even had a person ask if I even cared because I was so nonchalant in the face of possibly losing my business and (other personal things).

This made me realize how unshakable my Faith is...This was a moment of clarity and great understanding! Not once did I consider giving up or question the journey! I never felt compelled to go off the path...actually...it let me know I am on the exact pathway that I should be on!

Know that you are MEANT for greatness...You are here to be happy, to enjoy life and to have AWESOME experiences! Of course there are going to be THINGS that are uncomfortable, but if you have FAITH and understand it's all a part of something BIGGER and BETTER, discomfort will last only for seconds and will turn into gratitude!

If you have followed me, you know that I did a 2nd Big Chop last year.
Here's a before and after picture...I cut it because it was very time consuming to do and one night in the middle of doing two strand twists...I got frustrated and started chopping it off! (The second picture is actually 5 months after the chop. It was shorter than this) It was so sexy and I fell in love with it all over again...It was just as or even more so liberating then the first time because this time NO TRIALS and ERRORS! I not only had the perfect products to use, but I also had learned a TON of styling techniques, I was SO ready...Plus I knew before doing it that I was going to LOVE it, so there was no fear or anxiety in doing it!

So, I did a growth check this weekend and was SHOCKED! I canNOT believe how much my hair has grown! It's INSANE I am at armpit length (APL)stretched already (Back and Front)! I was growing it out solely for the purpose of getting locs in September (next month), as I am still not FEELING putting hours and hours into my hair regularly, but now I think I am going to continue with my protective styling for another 6 months. OMG...It had to be about 4 years ago during some major struggles in my life, when I was looking for answers, clarity and peace! I came across a blog with someone's mission statement for her life. As I read it I was like, "Well goodness, she has high expectations for her life" This lady talked about improving so many aspect of her life, that just thinking about it overwhelmed me, but I made one anyhow...I ran across it the other day and as I read it...I had to say WOW...Just thinking about those rough times make me cringe, how could I ever imagine that my life could be so wonderful...but, I did..I IMAGINED it and kept imagining it until it became my reality! So, here it is.

I'm on a mission to become the Goddess that I was created to be. I will be whole in every area of my life. I will be financially stable and debt free. I will be healthy inside and outside. I will be spiritually guided. Emotionally, I will be available for my family and friends because I will not allow stress to drain me. My physical beauty will shine like a beacon, with my skin glowing and my hair in all its natural glory . I will serve as an example to the world of what a real woman is. I will keep my home fresh, clean and clutter free both inside and outside. My children will thrive off of the life they live because of me. My lifestyle will become contagious and people around me will begin to live better lives because of it. I will exhibit poise and elegance in my language both verbal and nonverbal. I will choose to look at the positive no matter what the situation, I will seize every opportunity to learn and grow. I will share only love and not allow hate to be apart of me. Reading this quote gave me an "Ah Ha" moment that Oprah talks about...lol! The words were put together so perfectly, and in a way that gave me SO much clarity. As I got to the "shrinking" part, I realized that's what I was doing...Yet, my passion was to serve the world...Now, how could I do that if I was afraid of my own "power". This quote goes with me EVERYWHERE and it reminds me that I am here to shine, I am here to serve, I am here to matter, just like YOU ARE!

Continue this once a day until you see your doctor, who will need to obtain a culture, then prescribe the appropriate antibiotics.

Well, yeah it is! Last year I wrote an article in my newsletter about this and I got a serious lashing from a woman who called me a racist who will burn in the fires of hell, because I wanted to celebrate this month by featuring a black business each week. She told me that black businesses weren't the only businesses that needed help. I told her that just because I was advocating the support of black businesses didn't mean I was trying to take anything away from other businesses. She then wrote me back another nasty e-mail, which I read half way through and then deleted without returning an e-mail to her. (I did good huh, didn't even curse her out or get upset about it, well, just a little, but I understood that not only did I not owe her any further explanation, but if I wrote her an entire book on my reasoning, she could NEVER understand)

It's so important for us to support black businesses because many other races really aren't sure of exactly what our needs are in order to meet them. Also, unfortunately, in this economy African American's have been hit disproportionately harder than other races in terms of losing jobs, homes and savings, so starting a business is our only way to have gainful employment and to provide for our families. For many of us, having and maintaining a business, especially an online one, is our only means to making ends meet...and the list goes on and on! Better Than Bare Minerals???? YUP!

Have you ever used or heard of a birth control patch or a nicotine patch? If you have you know that they work by absorbing medications through the skin. Well guess what, patches aren’t the only form of skin absorption. The skin is the largest organ of the body. Many of the substances you put on your skin have the potential to be absorbed, especially if the skin is broken or damaged. Check the ingredients of your cosmetics to be sure they aren’t harmful for your skin or your health. (A few definitions are below).

A few years ago while hennaing my hair, I had an experience that completely freaked me out. Before I washed the henna out, I went to the restroom and I was totally shocked to see that my urine was green and remained that way for a few days. I also purchased bentonite clay to detoxify my skin, but after further research, I learned that it also detoxifies several organs in the body when applied to the scalp! This is when I realized just how much absorbency the skin has. From that day on I decided I would use products with as little chemicals in them as possible, I was now on a mad search for a healthy skin care line. I had no idea that the optimal products were right under my nose.

As I was on a search to find wonderful natural lotions and other bath and body products, I started to receive emails and read blogs about the transformation my products made to my customer’s SKIN, as well as their hair. Huh, skin care, I had never even considered using my line as or marketing them as bath and body products. The more I thought about it the more it made complete sense. My moisturizers are made of nutrient rich oils, healing butters and other ingredients that have been scientifically proven to treat many skin disorders as well as heal and tone the skin and in many cases, help with aging. Well, duh! Why didn’t I think of this? Many people suffer from skin disorders such as psoriasis, eczema, acne, dermatitis, seborrhea because of the ingredients found in their soaps and lotions. These are possible allergic reactions and can easily be soothed, treated, or cured altogether if the correct products are used and the harmful ones are avoided.

So I put Sweet Nature to the test! My goal was to go without make up by the time summer rolled around. I knew we were expecting a sweltering summer and I hated wearing foundation. No matter how light, sheer, or mineral rich it was, my foundation never held up for very long in the heat. My skin wasn’t horrible; I just wore foundation for the flawless, even toned “look” it gave my skin. Parabens (methyl, propyl-, butyl- and ethyl) - Used to inhibit microbial growth and to prolong the shelf life of products. Widely used, even though commonly known to be toxic. Cause many allergic reactions and cutaneous eruptions. Extremely toxic.
Mineral oil/Paraffin - Derivative of petroleum, used industrially as a cutting fluid and lubricating oil. It forms an oily layer on the skin and traps moisture under the skin thus preventing the skin from breathing. At the same time, it stops toxins and wastes from escaping.

Petrolatum and Paraffin Gel (petroleum jelly) - Mineral oil in a gel form; causes many problems for photosensitive skin (that is to say it augments damage from the sun). It also tends to interfere with the body's natural moisturizing mechanism leading to dry skin. Any product sold that contains this chemical creates the very conditions that it claims to relieve. Many manufacturers use petrolatum because it is incredibly cheap. Highly comedogenic.

Propylene Glycol - Derived from petroleum oil and found in automatic brakes and industrial defrosters. The Material Data Safety Sheet (MSDS: charter for use of the products) of propylene glycol warns against contact with the skin. Nevertheless, rare are the cosmetics that do not use it as a moisturizer. The effects of propylene glycol on human health are numerous and alarming. It could cause dermatitis, ototoxicity, kidney damage and liver problems, according to various clinical studies.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) Sodicum Laureth Sulphate (SLES) - Detergent used as a moisturizer in floor cleaning products, found in engines and in Agent Orange (which served to kill vegetation and profoundly harmed human and animal life during and long after the Vietnam War.) SLS and SLES are used in laboratories as skin irritants in order to test soothing products. However, their low coast makes them present in the majority of shampoos and cosmetic foaming products. Several studies have underlined the harmful effects of their use: urinary infections, kidney and bladder infections, fertility problems, irritation to the eyes, skin and scalp, allergic reactions, lesions of the scalp and hair loss. Certain studies have asserted that SLS and SLES are carcinogenic.

If You've Ever Considered Henna'g Your Hair...Read this first!

About three years ago, while on one of the many hair sites and forums I am a member of, I came across a henna thread. As I was reading it, I noticed how many wonderful things the women were saying about their hennaing results such as stronger, more manageable, and overall healthier hair. Of course I just had to try it. I clicked on one of the links and was directed to one of the most comprehensive henna sites ever. The site showed the chemical make-up of henna, Offered the different kinds of henna from different corners of the world, pictures of hair that had been hennaed, a ton of definitions relating to henna, and so much more. I sat on that website for hours researching it before I purchased a ton of it!

The henna was delivered super fast and of course I was extremely excited to try it out. Although I had memorized the recipe to a "t", I pulled up the site so that I was 100% sure I was doing it the exact way the site had directed. I poured the henna in a plastic bowl then slowly added lemon juice to the mixture, as I constantly stirred. Finally, once the mixture turned into the yogurt-like consistency, I covered the bowl with Saran Wrap and placed it in a warm area for 24 hours.

The next day, I noticed the mixture had a slight orangey tint as they indicated it would, and smelled very Earthy. I loved the smell as it made me feel as if I was getting ready to do something so wonderful and healthy for my hair. Like the site instructed, I added a bit more lemon juice to the mixture and began to applying to my newly washed hair. My hair was already sectioned in 6 or 8 puffs, so I just took down one puff at a time and applied the mixture section by section. It was easy, but very messy. Then I covered my hair with Saran Wrap, and planned to keep it in for the full 4 hours recommended on the site.

By the second hour, I had to use the restroom. I performed my usual "rituals" and then when I got up, I noticed that my urine was bright green! I had read a ton of stuff on that site, but nothing warned me that my urine could possibly turn green. Of course I was freaked out. I rushed to wash the henna out of my hair and Googled "green pee/henna". I saw that this was actually a common, non-harmful side effect some people experience because of the way their body processed the henna. I was so relieved when I read this on several sites, but I was absolutely horrified when I felt my hair!

Saying that my hair felt like a Brillo Pad was an understatement; it felt more like barbed wire. Where in the world were all of these benefits I was suppose to experience? Where the women on the forums conspiring to ruin my beautiful natural hair? I followed the instructions so perfectly, that I fully expected to have a head full of new, soft, more manageable and shiny hair. I deep conditioned it and moisturized it to death; still dry as a bone! Was I going to have to cut off the hair that I had finally learned to love and struggled for almost two years to grow? Over the next few months, my hair slowly returned to its normal state. I was thankful and vowed to never touch henna again.

Then about two years later, I got sucked up into another henna thread and again, these women were going on and on about how they loved henna and the wonderful results they were receiving. I went into the "henna challenge" forum and there were pictures of such beautiful hair. Okay, what was going on? I wanted that hair so badly, so I posted my experience in the forum to see if I could get some feedback. I was quickly informed that I had made a HUGE mistake; the recipe wasn't for African American hair. I had used a recipe with way too much acid and didn't add any moisturizing properties to balance the drying affect of the acid. Was I going to be brave enough to try this again? The pictures in the forum left me no other choice!

This time I used apple cider vinegar because the acid level was much lower than the lemon juice and acv is wonderful for conditioning the scalp. I also learned that I was using way too much acid, so this time I used just enough to dampen the henna and then poured spring water and aloe vera juice to saturate it to the yogurt-like consistency. After letting it sit for 24 hours, I added plain yogurt, raw honey and a mixture of very moisturizing oils, along with a couple more tablespoons of acv. This time I made sure I used a shampoo with no sulfates and a deep conditioner that was super moisturizing. All of the other steps remained the same. After 3 hours of processing, I rinsed my hair and finally, I got to experience what all the fuss was about. My coils were actually looser, my hair felt stronger, and it was a soft as a big old cloud! I joined the challenge and did a henna treatment every two weeks. It was a lot of work, but my hair was thanking me for it each time I went to comb through it.

Eventually my pee stopped turning green and I went to doing a treatment every six weeks and then stopped all together over a period of time. It was difficult to find 4 hours to dedicate to it, not including the 5 hours it took to actually do my hair. I have now started back on track with every six weeks with the henna and have even given my 7 year old daughter a couple treatments, which she loves.

Why Am I Losing My Hair?

Several years ago I lost a tremendous amount of hair after, what I believe, was an allergic reaction to toxic ingredients in a product I used in my hair. I went to several professionals and received injections in my scalp for treatment of alopecia, but not one could give me a definite diagnosis or treatment for the severe hair loss. For about 8 or 9 years; I struggled to grow my hair back; and still to this day, my hair grows slower and thinner in the affected areas, although it is not very noticeable to anyone other than myself

Many women may suffer from some form of hair loss throughout their lives, especially a woman over the age of 40. Studies have shown that women in this age group can experience an average of 20% thinning throughout their entire head. (The percentage can be greater if a person had mishandled and chemically altered their hair for long periods of time). Other culprits for hair loss may be heredity, medication, illness or a hair disorders.

Heredity, medication and illness are all causes that can be easily noticed and diagnosed by a doctor, but disorders aren’t as detectable. Hair disorders range from hair shaft abnormalities, genetic hair disorders, alopecia, and infectious hair diseases; all of which can cause sudden, gradual, permanent, or temporary hair loss.

One of the most common hair shaft disorders is trichorrhexis nodosa, which is a focal defect in the hair fiber. The focal defect develops when there is an absence of the cuticle layer of the hair. This layer provides support against the daily elements the hair faces and protects the cortex. With the exposure of the cortex the hair weakens and becomes damaged more quickly and severely. Acquired trichorrhexis nodosa can be self induced by over processing and manipulating the hair as well has excessive use of heat and chemicals

A very common genetic hair disorder is Androgenetic alopecia, which affects both men and women equally. In men, this condition is known as male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness in women. Male pattern baldness generally shows with a receding hairline, while a woman’s hair becomes thinner throughout the top of the head, but the hairline does not recede. There are many medications and procedures on the market to assist in fighting these disorder

Scalp infections and infestations also cause hair loss. They are either caused by fungus, bacteria, viruses or parasites. Ringworm is caused by a fungus which will cause the hair to fall out, leaving only scaly skin. Folliculitis, or inflammation of hair follicle, is acne like and may cause redness around the infected follicle. As the folliculitis progresses the hair often falls out. Folliculities can be either viral, fungal, or yeast induced. Many of these infections are noticieable first by itchy sensation, inflammation, or soreness, but the site generally can’t be seen underneath the hair, so be careful when scratching, as they usually are contagious and can spread from scratching and breaking the skin

There are many more causes for hair loss in women; many of which are readily detectable. Sometimes if you are using the best products and taking care of your hair perfectly, you still may suffer mild to severe hair loss. I’ve included a brief list of possible medications that may be a culprit in hair loss as well as medical conditions

When you wash your hair, does it seem really dry and brittle? Have you ever avoided washing your hair for weeks at a time, some of us for months, because you just knew it was going to take a few days for your hair to come back to life; to soften up or feel moisturized?
